The prison environment can be inherently damaging to the mental health of prisoners due to disconnection from their families and society, lack of social support, and congestion among other factors. Research has shown that the most common mental disorders in the prison population are severe depression, and anxiety disorder which create difficulties in adaptation to prison and the community after release. A slim linkage has been established by research between mental Health and crime, that criminal cases like sex crime, arson, and homicidal attempts are a result of Mental disorders however it’s believed that these are pushed by drug abuse or the use of substances.
At PHF we take the mental health of our clients seriously and we acknowledge the effects of mental health in the criminal justice system, we have mental health counseling sessions, seminars, and workshops among other activities aimed at promoting the advancement of mental health awareness, prevention of mental disorders and practice of recovery-focused services within the communities and the various prisons within Uganda.
